3 Tips to Break Your Fast!

The Prophet S.A.W. said,

“Allah the Exalted and Majestic said: Every act of the son of Adam is for himself, except for fasting. It is (exclusively) meant for Me and I (alone) will reward it. Fasting is a shield. When any one of you is fasting on a day, he should neither indulge in obscene language nor raise his voice; or if anyone reviles him or tries to quarrel with him, he should say: “I am fasting”.

By Him (Allah), in Whose Hand is the life of Muhammad, the breath of the fasting person is sweeter to Allah on the Day of judgment than the fragrance of musk. The one who fasts has two (occasions) of joy: one is when he breaks the fast, he is glad about the breaking of (the fast), and (the other) is when he meets his Lord he is glad about his fast.”

(Sahih Muslim)

During Ramadhan, one of the most anticipated times of the day is the time for us to break our fast. After more than 12 hours going without food and water, we will look forward to breaking our fast when the call to prayer for Maghrib commences.

But for some of us, we might get a little too excited to break our fast that we tend to forget that there are rewards for breaking our fast according to Prophet Muhammad S.A.W.

Here we share five simple tips and reminders for when we break our fast this holy month!

1. Be conscious of the food you consume

It’s really tempting when you have a spread of delicious food on the table. But remember! It’s always better to break your fast by having something sweet - dates - or drinking plain water to slowly ease your stomach after a long day having gone without food and water.

"The Messenger of Allah would break the fast with fresh dates before performing Solat. If there were no fresh dates then (he would break the fast) with dried dates, and if there were no dried dates then he would take a few sips of water."

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

Another important reminder is to not overeat! A reminder from our Prophet S.A.W. is to always eat in moderation. While this might be difficult for some of us, this holy month may be the best time to start practising that and avoid overindulging.

We hope that through this reminder, we will continue to stay healthy and fit for us to be able to perform quality acts of worship, insyaAllah!

2. Make sincere duas when breaking fast

Some of us have heard of this, while some of us tend to always forget this; but one of the best times to make dua is during the time of breaking our fast! According to our Beloved Prophet S.A.W,

“There are three whose supplication is not rejected: The fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just leader, and the supplication of the oppressed person; Allah raises it up above the clouds and opens the gates of heaven to it. And the Lord says: ‘By My might, I shall surely aid you, even if it should be after a while.’”

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

While in another hadith, the Prophet S.A.W. said:

إِنَّ لِلصَّائِمِ عِنْدَ فِطْرِهِ لَدَعْوَةً مَا تُرَدُّ

“When the fasting person breaks his fast, his supplication is not turned back.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah)

As you’re waiting for the call to prayer and just before you break your fast, remember to recite a sincere prayer for yourself and your loved ones. Ask from Allah S.W.T. anything that your heart desires, with the intention of asking from the Almighty.

May Allah S.W.T. accept our fast and the prayers that we make at the end of every fast.

3. Share the blessings of Iftar!

Lastly, don’t forget to share the blessings of Iftar with your loved ones and friends!

"Whoever provides the food for a fasting person to break his fast with, then for him is the same reward as his (the fasting person's), without anything being diminished from the reward of the fasting person."

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

There are countless blessings around for us to share, and sharing our Iftar is one of the best ways to reap rewards in this holy month, as well as an opportunity to foster better relationships with one another!

Let’s spread love and blessings with good deeds, and have a blessed Iftar together.

At the same time, let’s take this moment to remember those in our Ummah who are not as privileged as us, those who are struggling with far greater challenges this Ramadhan, those who are unable to break their fast with a proper meal.

Many Muslims worldwide who are living in poverty are unable to break their fasts. By sharing an Iftar Meal with them from just SGD$30, you will be rewarded for easing their worship, and fulfilling yours.

Share your blessings through our Ehsan Ramadhan campaigns today.
