5 Forgotten Sunnahs We Should Practice Daily

Have you ever been in a situation where you find yourself searching on google, ‘How to be successful’ or ‘Ways to succeed in life’?

Yet, the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. - which refers to his life and teachings - have already provided us with gems on how to lead life the best way, in the right way, while serving our main purpose in this world.

It is an ultimate guidance for leading a productive, successful life, and as Prophet Muhammad s.a.w said:

"Whoever revives my Sunnah, then he has loved me. And whoever loved me, he shall be with me in Paradise.” (Tirmidhi)

We are blessed with Islam, and the religion teaches us about all the ingredients that make up a successful life - not only attaining success in this life, but in the Hereafter as well, insya-Allah.

We should strive to live our life by the Sunnah every day, as much as possible. Not only for our own personal gain, but out of love for our Beloved Prophet s.a.w. We should strive to actively seek the Barakah that comes with learning about the life of the final Messenger to mankind. We should follow in his footsteps, so that our love and respect for the Beloved would grow.

During the course of learning about the Prophet s.a.w, we come across hundreds of his attributes, habits, and stories - all of which are beneficial for our lives if we implement them.

Here, we have 5 Sunnahs of the Prophet s.a.w that might have been forgotten or not as widely known to many. Together, we should aim to revive the Prophet’s s.a.w Sunnahs, in the hopes of increasing our productivity, seeking the company of our Beloved Prophet s.a.w in the Hereafter as well as to gain the blessings of Allah s.w.t.

1. Waking Up and Clearing Your Nose

Prophet Muhammad s.a.w said,

“When one of you wakes up from his sleep, he must blow of his nose three times, for the shaytan spends the night inside one’s nostrils.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

2. Avoid blowing or exhaling breath into your drink

It is narrated in the hadith below:

“Do not blow from your mouth into food and water.” (Bukhari).

Additionally, science proves that you carry some of the bacteria in your mouth, and by blowing it on food or drinking water you are transferring all of the bacteria into your drink or food too. The carbon dioxide that we exhale can also decrease the number of blood pH in our bodies.

3. Drink in 3 Gulps!

The Prophet s.a.w said,

“Do not drink in one breath just as the camel does. Rather, drink twice and thrice, and mention (Allah’s) Name before drinking and thank (Him) upon finishing.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

The Prophet s.a.w would not gulp his drink down in one go, rather he would take three sips and breathe in between each one, and did not breathe into the vessel from which he was drinking.

It is recommended to sit down when you drink, take breaks as you drink instead of gulping it down and saying Alhamdulillah after. Drinking water in a rush will cause more harm than good, as it can also cause choking.

4. Have a drink of water after drinking milk

The Prophet drank some milk then called for some water. Once he got the water, he rinsed his mouth and said:

"It has fat." (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Imam An-Nawawi said in Sharh Saheeh Muslim: This hadith confirms it’s recommended to rinse the mouth after drinking milk.

5. Don’t say Yuck

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah s.a.w would never complain about food. If he liked something, he would eat it. If he disliked it, he would leave it. (Bukhari & Muslim)

Sometimes, we might be guilty of taking things for granted. Hence, we should always remember to be grateful, and to never complain about our blessings and rezeki.

We hope that these Sunnahs have inspired you to practice the teachings and ways of our Beloved Prophet s.a.w daily. May we strive to reap the blessings and rewards of this blessed month of Rabi’ul-Awwal, insya-Allah.
