Singapore is well-known for its strong economy and high standard of living, but behind its skyscrapers and busy streets is a group of individuals who are sometimes overlooked – our migrant friends. They came here in search of better job opportunities and a chance to support their families back home. However, the reality of their lives in Singapore is far from ideal.
Many of them live in overcrowded dorms that lack basic necessities like proper sanitation and adequate space. They also often work long hours in dangerous or physically demanding jobs, for low wages. Furthermore, many of them are separated from their families and support systems, leading to feelings of loneliness and isolation.
There is also the issue of food insecurity, as access to food is often difficult. Limited cooking facilities make it difficult to prepare fresh meals. Additionally, some employers provide inadequate food rations, leaving workers hungry and vulnerable to exploitation.
The COVID-19 pandemic has only worsened these issues. Many migrant workers have been left stranded in Singapore due to travel restrictions, and have lost their jobs or had their wages reduced. This has made accessing food and resources even more challenging.
As the holy month of Ramadhan draws to a close, Muslims around the world are gearing up to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr and will be feasting on food with their loved ones. However, for our migrant brothers here in Singapore, Eid will be just another day away from their loved ones. This can be a lonely and difficult time and they may not have the means to celebrate the occasion.
The plight of migrant workers in Singapore remains a pressing issue that requires urgent attention. While we may not be able to make drastic changes to improve their plight, we can still make a difference on a personal level by supporting different projects that contribute to improving their lives.
This Eid, let’s show our appreciation for the contributions of these workers and help to make the festivity a little brighter for them. Join us in showing our solidarity with those who are far from home and support our Eid Meals for Migrant Workers initiative as we serve them with delicious meals to give them a taste of home.
This Eid, let's share the joy and generosity of the season. Donate today to provide them with Eid Meals.
